Shaheen Merali Berlin

Lives in Berlin and London. He is a visual artist, curator and educator of Indian origin. In 2003 he became the Head of the Department for exhibiton, film and new media at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin. Since 1993 he had been a lecturer at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design and 1999-2003 a researcher at the University of Westminster. In 1988, he co-founded "Panchayat Arts Education Resource Unit" in East London, an archive that specifically addressed the needs and issues of non-European artists and cultural producers. The archive, which is currently based at the University of Westminster, holds one of the most extensive collection of theoretical and primary visual materials related to issue based arts and contemporary intercultural debates.
Merali's work as an artist has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including two survey shows in New York, "Out of India" at the Queens Museum, and "Transforming The Crown" at the Bronx Museum. Merali has curated over twenty shows in Europe and North America including the major international exhibition "Slow Release", Bishopsgate Goodsyard, London 1999/2000, and the "Black Atlantic", Berlin 2004.
